The city of my birth, Shenzhen, is often referred to as the Silicon Valley of China, with Huaqiangbei at its forefront as a hub for electronic manufacturing. During my field research in
Huaqiangbei, I observed a unique dynamic where local residents engage in business activities with a strong sense of belonging, considering themselves the hosts of Huaqiangbei. Many of these residents hail from Chaoshan, Guangdong, and their dialects, clan traditions, living customs, and lineage collectively shape the industrial landscape, forming an ethnic field.
As the industry expanded, external influences penetrated the Huaqiangbei Market, leading to intangible and tangible competitions between different clans and outsiders across various industry links. One of the original functions of bird singing is to claim territorial sovereignty. I tried to reconstruct the field research of Huaqiangbei with the behavior pattern of the bird population. In my installation, a phylogenetic tree symbolizing the intricate bonds of bloodline connections, serves as a representation of the construction of individual and collective identities and memories within the context of urbanization.
By delving into the sociocultural implications of technology and the digital age, they emphasize the urgent need for critical discourse and awareness surrounding the biases and prejudices persisting in our technologically mediated interactions
Use the relationship between birds and this symbiotic tree to express the relationship between chaoshan clan and Huaqiangbei
